Top 5 Skills to Boost Your Freelance Career

Top 5 Skills to Boost Your Freelance Career

Working remotely and having the flexibility to create your own schedule is a dream for many of us. While these roles aren't as common as they used to be in the corporate world, you can still gain this experience as a freelancer.

Top 5 Skills to Boost Your Freelance Career
Top 5 Skills to Boost Your Freelance Career

Most freelance projects do not adhere to the constraints of traditional employment relationships and have the freedom to choose their clients. This autonomy allows freelancers to diversify their income streams, choose the projects that interest them most, and enjoy a greater degree of flexibility in shaping their work life.

Thus, success as a freelancer requires a unique set of skills that take time, effort, and proactive action to develop. If you want to make it big as a freelancer, here are the best skills to help you grow your business and continue to grow personally and professionally.

Digital marketing

Digital marketing is a popular job for freelancers. But even if you don't work in this specific niche, learning the basics can help you maintain a relatively stable freelance career.

With digital marketing, you can reach out to potential clients and target your marketing efforts to those who are most likely to engage with your services. The biggest advantage of digital marketing is the ability to target audiences based on metrics such as age, gender, location, and more.

If you have some way of harvesting data, making sense of it and knowing what to do with it, digital marketing will help you reach the people most likely to need and pay for your service.

Caring for sales

In short, nurturing is the process of developing and strengthening relationships with potential clients in hopes of securing business at a later date. It includes regular communication, follow-up and personalized attention that builds trust over the long term and establishes you as a reliable and knowledgeable professional in your field.

One thing to remember is that it's normal to go through hundreds of people before you get to five or ten people who will actually pay for your services. With up to 80% of leads never converting into sales, it's crucial for you to nurture your leads strategically.

Apply the famous Pareto principle here: focus on the 20% of your potential customers who will generate 80% of your profits. These 20% are the most likely to convert to paying customers, so try to find them and focus your cultivation efforts on them.

I'm not saying you should abandon the other 80% of your potential customers. Reach out to them once in a while by sending them an email or two to remind them of your services, just so they don't forget who you are.

Remember, just because they don't need your services now doesn't mean they won't need them in the future or that they don't know someone who could be your future client.

Organization of time

Owning your time as a freelancer means gaining the ability to schedule your own work hours, as long as you are able to deliver your deliveries on the day and time agreed upon with the client.

While it may seem easy and convenient on paper, developing excellent time management skills is harder than it looks. With no one dictating your work hours, you'll be in charge of setting realistic deadlines for yourself and maintaining open communication with clients about project schedules.

Many freelancers struggle with this, especially in the beginning. But since you're running your own business, you'll want to grow it quickly to keep booking clients and develop a reputation as a reliable freelancer. I suggest finding a project management tool to help you stay organized, like Trello, Airtable, or even Google Sheets. Whatever suits you and your style best, use it and perfect it.

Financial management

In addition to keeping track of your personal finances, you'll also want to know how to manage your business finances. Without an HR or accounting department to keep your books in order, the responsibility of ensuring your financial stability falls squarely on your shoulders as a freelancer.

You'll want to learn some basic accounting because it will come in handy when reporting income for taxes. Besides, how would you know if you're actually making money without a clear understanding of your finances?

However, financial management is not just about bookkeeping. The most important aspect is to make sure you get paid on time. If you have multiple clients, you need to keep track of invoicing, set clear payment terms and have a strategy for dealing with late payments.

All of this may seem overwhelming at first, but as a newbie to the industry, you shouldn't find it impossible to get your books in order on your own. This will change as your career progresses, but once you have enough clients it may make sense to hire specialist bookkeepers and accountants to help you with this side of the business.

Coaching

As a freelancer, it's tempting to treat projects and clients as mere transactions. Complete your deliveries, get paid on time and move on to the next project. But as some areas of freelancing become more saturated, it's freelancers who cross the line that stand out.

To really stand out in a sea of freelancers, I'd suggest diving deeper into the client's business goals and challenges. For example, instead of just offering to create social media content, you might suggest they explore email marketing and see if more direct forms of communication can help them achieve their sales goals.

In addition to potentially getting another contract on top of your original one, you also position yourself as an expert in multiple areas that work well together, allowing you to kill two birds with one stone.

Developing these five skills will help you improve your freelance career, but don't worry if you're not there yet. Start working on these skills as you go and you'll be a freelance professional in no time. Rooting for you!

7 unexpected new ways to make money in 2024

The hustle is real, but what if it doesn't have to be? In 2024, the traditional work-to-earn model is taking a backseat to a new wave of unconventional income streams. Forget the side hustle; we're talking about turning your passions, hobbies, and even your furry friends into unexpected paths to financial freedom.

Are you ready to ditch the predictable and embrace the unheard of? Here are 7 revolutionary new ways to make money next year:

7 unexpected (but real!) new ways to make money in 2024

Good. So what are 7 unexpected new ways to make money? Let's explore!

1. Monetize Your Memes: Master the art of meme marketing

The number one new way to make money is meme monetization. Yes! Remember those happy faces you share for digital laughs? It turns out that they can turn into serious money. The rise of meme marketing has spawned agencies dedicated to creating viral gold, and you can be part of the gold rush. Whether you're a meme connoisseur or a digital Picasso, platforms like Fiverr and Upwork connect you with brands looking for the magic of memes. Imagine headlines that break the spine, visuals that break the internet, and relationships that skyrocket. Refine your humor, embrace the absurd, and watch your bank account (and followers) soar.

2. Rent out your stuff, reap the rewards: Sharing is the new ownership

Number 2 among the new ways to make money is renting out your stuff. This is real!

Remember that little-used treadmill gathering dust in the corner? It's time to turn that dust into dollars. Peer-to-peer rental platforms like Turo (cars), Fat Llama (equipment) and RentMyCloset (fashion) unlock the earning potential of your unused assets. Think about it: unused gym equipment becomes someone's fitness salvation, that old camera becomes a budding photographer's dream, and your designers become someone else on the red carpet. Clean up your life, eliminate your debt, and watch your bank account free up alongside.

3. Get Paid to Play: Professional gaming goes beyond esports

Can you get paid to play? Oh yes! Here comes the third option on the list of new ways to make money.

Move over esports, there's a brand new game in town and everyone can play. Streaming platforms like Twitch and YouTube are turning casual gamers into content creators, generating revenue through subscriptions, sponsorships, and even in-game donations. But it's not just about racking up kills. Building a loyal audience requires engaging commentary, entertaining personalities and unique gameplay. Master your chosen game, cultivate your online persona and turn your thumbs into a ticket to financial victory.

4. Unleash Your Inner Sherlock: The Booming Business of Online Detection

What is number 4 on the list of new ways to make money?

Do you have a knack for deductions that would make Sherlock Holmes jealous? The internet needs your skills. From data mining and competitive analysis to virtual detective work and online fraud investigations, demand for digital detectives is growing. Platforms like Amazon Mechanical Turk and Upwork offer endless gigs for the eagle-eyed and analytically minded. Hone your research skills, learn basic coding and become an online data master. The mysteries (and payoffs) are out there waiting to be solved.

5. Teach the world, one micro-lesson at a time: Knowledge is power (and pay)

Sharing knowledge as a way of income is the old way. However, the addition of technology makes it even sweeter.

Have you ever wished you could turn your expertise into income without the commitment of a traditional course? Enter the world of microlearning platforms like Skillshare and Udemy. These platforms allow you to break down your knowledge into small, digestible lessons that cater to students with busy schedules and short attention spans. From cooking hacks to coding basics and public speaking tips to personal finance guides, your unique skill set is a gold mine waiting to be mined.

6. Let your pets pay the bills: Furry Friends, Financial Fluff

Number 6 on the list of new ways to make money is making money from your pets.

Our furry companions bring us joy, but did you know they can also bring us cold, hard cash? The pet industry is booming and with it, opportunities for pet-loving entrepreneurs. The possibilities are endless, from dog walking and pet sitting to pet photography and custom pet accessories. Think outside the box: offer luxury pet accommodations, create personalized pet training programs, or launch a line of eco-friendly pet toys. Your creativity (and cuddling) can be your ticket to financial independence.

7. Voice of the future: Text-to-speech is coming to the fore

The rise of audiobooks and artificial intelligence assistants has created a thriving market for text-to-speech narration. If you have a captivating voice and a talent for enunciation, this could be your golden ticket. Platforms like Narrate and Voice123 connect you with publishers, filmmakers, and even e-learning companies that need your voice talent. Practice different accents, learn storytelling techniques, and build a demo reel that showcases your vocal versatility. Your voice can be the soundtrack to someone else's success story.

Conclusion: New ways to make money

Forget cubicle browsing and corner office blues. In 2024, the definition of "work" is being rewritten, and the possibilities are as limitless as your imagination. These untapped income streams and new ways to make money are more than just a side hustle; they are opportunities to monetize your passions, leverage your skills, and rewrite the rules of financial success. Whether you're a meme maestro, pet breeder, or voiceover virtuoso, the ability to make money beyond traditional means is within your reach.

But remember, it's not just about making a quick profit. It's about finding joy in unexpected places, turning your hobbies into a hustle, and building a lifestyle that fuels your soul and your bank account. So throw away the limitations, embrace the unconventional and enter the exciting world of new age earning. Remember, the road less traveled can lead you to your financial pot of gold.
