According to a survey by market insights platform GitNux, nearly three-quarters of Gen Z students worry about how to afford tuition, a third are already in debt, and due to growing financial pressures, some 47% — nearly half of Gen Zers — were more concerned about making money than previous generations at their age, leading them to work longer hours in college.

Perhaps that's one reason why starting a side hustle or becoming a remote freelancer is so appealing to Gen Zers, with 43% of them actively employed in the gig economy, according to Upwork's 2022 research.

Gen Zers are the first group to be raised as digital natives. Even for the oldest of the generational cohort, iPhones were already on the market at the age of ten. This has affected many aspects of their lives, from how they socialize to how they shop, but as this generation enters the workforce, it has also clearly affected how they view work.

As another graduation season approaches and we anticipate a new influx of Gen Zers into the workforce, Upwork analyzed how Gen Zers are already shaping the workforce—providing unique insights into the skills, flexibility, and type of work arrangements they want.

Key findings include:

• Gen Zers are more likely to work for companies that employ freelancers: Nearly three-quarters (73%) of Gen Zers say they work for a company that uses freelancers; that compares to 67% of millennials, 58% of Gen Xers and 53% of baby boomers.

• Younger generations more likely to engage freelancers in the future: 65% of Gen Zers and 78% of Millennials say they plan to use more freelancers in the next five years than they do today.

• Gen Zers recognize that freelancers are part of a complete talent strategy: In fact, 61% of Gen Zers believe that using freelancers is a very effective lever for building a talent pool, compared to 47% of Millennials, 35% of Gen Xers, and 37% of baby boomers.

• Gen Zers plan to keep telecommuting: Nine in 10 Gen Zers and 82% of Millennials say they are much more likely to overhaul remote work as a key recruiting lever. Compared to only 71% of Gen Xers and 59% of Baby Boomers.

For starters, our latest Freelance Forward report revealed that freelancing continues to be an attractive career choice for young professionals. The recent waves of mass layoffs and mandatory reinstatements certainly haven't helped the perceived power imbalance.

According to our research, in 2022, 43% of all Gen Zers and 46% of Millennial professionals were freelancers. When you look at the top reasons for freelancing in this age group: "To be able to do work that I'm passionate about or that gives me meaning", "To take more control of my personal development and career" and "To have flexibility in my schedule make a list These young professionals want to be in control of the work they do, who they do it for, and when they do it. Gen Z is normalizing career paths and job opportunities outside of the traditional 9-to-5.
